Derek Bean is a dedicated and influential figure in New Mexico high school basketball, currently serving as the head coach for the Hot Springs Boys High School basketball team. A 2005 graduate of Hot Springs High School, Bean has deep roots in the community and a profound commitment to the sport.
Derek Bean grew up in Hot Springs, New Mexico, where he developed a passion for basketball at an early age. His high school years were marked by a strong involvement in sports, although he never had the opportunity to play in the postseason during his time as a student.
Bean’s coaching journey began with a vision to revive the Hot Springs basketball program. In his second year as head coach, he led the team to its first district title since 20001. Under his leadership, the Tigers have seen a remarkable turnaround, including a state championship victory that energized the entire community.
His coaching philosophy emphasizes teamwork, resilience, and a strong defensive strategy. Bean’s ability to inspire and develop young talent has been a cornerstone of his success. He has guided his team through numerous challenges, including a memorable season where the Tigers won 15 straight games following their state championship2.
Beyond his coaching duties, Derek Bean is also a respected member of the New Mexico High School Coaches Association (NMHSCA) Board, representing the Southwest region. John Zumbrun is a seasoned and versatile basketball coach at Carlsbad High School, known for his impactful coaching of both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. His journey from Hobbs to Carlsbad has been marked by dedication, success, and a passion for developing young athletes.
John Zumbrun began his coaching career in Hobbs, New Mexico, where he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the game. Zumbrun initially took the helm of the Carlsbad Cavegirls basketball team, where he spent 12 years building a strong and competitive program. During his tenure, he led the Cavegirls to 238 victories and ensured their participation in the state tournament every year. His ability to create a winning culture and foster team spirit was evident as the Cavegirls consistently performed at a high level.
In 2020, Zumbrun made a significant transition, taking over as the head coach for the Carlsbad Cavemen boys’ basketball team. This move came after the resignation of the previous coach, Steve Garza. Zumbrun saw this as a new challenge and an opportunity to bring his coaching philosophy to the boys’ team. Despite the differences in coaching boys and girls, Zumbrun’s fundamental principles of adapting to his players’ strengths and fostering a competitive environment remained constant.

Dominique Richardson is a passionate and experienced basketball coach currently leading the boys’ basketball team at Bloomfield High School. His journey in coaching has been marked by significant achievements and a deep commitment to developing young athletes.
Richardson began his coaching career at Newcomb High School, where he quickly made a name for himself. During his tenure, he transformed the Newcomb Skyhawks into a competitive team. In his debut season (2014-15), Richardson led the Skyhawks to a district championship and a 20-6 overall record. His ability to connect with his players and build a strong team culture was evident from the start.
Despite facing challenges, Richardson’s leadership saw the Skyhawks consistently improve. His time at Newcomb was marked by a commitment to not just winning games, but also mentoring his players and preparing them for future success.

EZ Panas is the head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Valley High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Known for his dedication and strategic acumen, Panas has been a pivotal figure in the school’s basketball program, bringing a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the team.
Before stepping into the role of head coach, EZ Panas spent 17 years as an assistant coach at Valley High School. During this time, he worked closely with the legendary coach Joe Coleman, who led the Vikings to three state championships. Panas’s long tenure as an assistant coach allowed him to develop a deep understanding of the team’s culture and the strategies that made them successful.
In 2021, Panas was appointed as the head coach of the Valley Vikings, following Coach Coleman’s retirement. This transition marked a new chapter for the team, as Panas aimed to build on the strong foundation laid by his predecessor while also bringing his unique approach to coaching.
Panas’s coaching philosophy emphasizes defense and teamwork. He believes that a strong defensive strategy is crucial for winning games and instills this mindset in his players. After her collegiate career, Martina transitioned into coaching and officiating, bringing her extensive knowledge and passion for sports to the next generation of athletes. She has been actively involved with the New Mexico Officials Association, where she officiates high school basketball games. Her commitment to fair play and sportsmanship has made her a respected figure in the local sports community.
In addition to her roles in athletics, Martina has also dedicated herself to education. She currently serves as a principal in Albuquerque, where she is known for her strong leadership and dedication to student success.
