Initiated the Coaching Milestone Awards program.
Board of Directors adopts a policy on the organizing of branch sports specific coaches organization within the NMHSCA
The Board of Directors approves the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association as a branch coaches organization within the NMHSCA
1988
The Annual Coaches School and All-Star Boys Basketball and Football games were moved to Las Cruces. This action by the Board of Directors took these events out of the City of Albuquerque for the first time in their over forty years of existence. The Executive Secretary was responsible for coordinating, scheduling, and managing the move.
The inaugural NMHSCA Coaches Awards Luncheon was held at the Holiday Inn de Las Cruces. An Awards Luncheon Program booklet was begun being produced for the event by the Executive Secretary.
The Distinguished Service Award program was initiated.
1987
The Association’s bylaws were amended as follows:
The State was now divided geographically into five regions from which representatives (2) would be elected to the Board of Directors. A Central Region was created out of the existing Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast Regions
Voting positions were added to the NMHSCA Board of Directors for an appointed representative from the New Mexico Activities Association staff and the New Mexico Athletic Directors Association.
The “New Mexico Coach” newsletter began being produced and published three times a year (fall, winter/spring, and summer). The publication was created as a Board project, but in a short time the writing layout and preparation for printing the newsletter had become the responsibility of the Executive Secretary. Copies are mailed to the membership and many other interested groups (exhibitors, school staffs, corporate sponsors, etc.)
Inaugural Blue vs. Gray (later to become North vs. South) All Classes All-Star Softball games in Carlsbad.
Began operating a weekly Bingo operation that generated revenue for the Association to fund more benefits and programs for the membership and their student athletes.

Inaugural North vs. South A/AA All-Star Girls Basketball game in conjunction with the Girls AAA/AAAA game in Farmington.
Inaugural Coaches Golf Tournament in conjunction with the Annual Coaches School.

Inaugural North vs. South A/AA and AAA/AAAA All-Star Volleyball matches in Roswell.
Introduced Sports Medicine and began offering Volleyball and the ACEP (Coaches Education) program at the Annual Coaches School.
1983
The NMHSCA hosted the 18th Annual National Conference of the National High School Athletic Coaches Association at the Albuquerque Convention Center; Gibbs served as the conference chairman.
Initiated the Coaches of New Mexico State Championship High School Teams Awards program.
