Buster Mabrey
Thomas Mabrey has been a long time member of the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. He has lived and worked in four of the five regions in the state. Thomas "Buster" Mabrey was raised in Hobbs, New Mexico. After graduation in 1985, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He fulfilled a five year tour aboard the USS Aspro, a nuclear powered submarine. Following his military service, he returned to the Hobbs community and spent two years working in the oilfields of southeast New Mexico. During this time period he began officiating basketball to stay involved in high school athletics. In the summer of 1992, Buster moved to Las Cruces to attend New Mexico State University. In that same summer, he became an assistant football and track coach at Mayfield High School. While at Mayfield working under Mike Draper and Jim Bradley, he had the opportunity to be a part of three football state championships and multiple district championships. As the head track and field coach, Mayfield won one district championship. In 2001, Buster was chosen to officiate the New Mexico Boys State Basketball Championships. During that summer, he was hired as the defensive coordinator in Snyder, Texas. After two years in Texas, he left West Texas football and was hired as an assistant director at the New Mexico Activities Association; where he directed the state volleyball, basketball and softball championships. In 2006, he became the athletic director at Piedra Vista High School and helped make "PV - The Place to Be!" Buster's responsibilities at the Coaches Association will include the administration and/or oversight of eighteen high school All-Star games and events, the organization of the annual coaches' clinic, membership services, corporate development as well as all awards programs.
